Dental Crowns

Often when a tooth has lost a significant portion of it’s structure or is in danger of fracturing, a crown is necessary. All crowns are not the same, there are many different types including all ceramic crowns, porcelain fused to metal crowns, and full metal crowns. Each has it’s own advantages and disadvantages and any of our dentists would be more than happy to explain these to you.
The process of making a crown involves many steps and usually requires two appointments. The first appointment involves the numbing of the tooth and it’s preparation. Once the tooth is prepared a final impression is taken and a temporary crown is placed on the tooth. At this point the appointment is over and the patient is free to go, however for the lab this is where the work starts. For the next two weeks the lab will go through a process of stages to fabricate the crown from that impression. The lab is very instrumental in the crown process, therefore our offices only use top quality local labs located in the East Valley, this provides us unique advantages over offices that don’t. After fabricating the crown the lab will then deliver the completed crown back to the office, the doctor will conduct all the necessary checks and adjustments and then cement the crown. This second appointment is usually very short and generally requires no anaesthesia.
